Medicare rebates cover 100 per cent of the cost. Private health insurance can cover additional costs. All you require at your first session is a referral in the form of a Mental Health Care Plan, from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician.
It is best practice to inform your GP’s receptionist prior to your GP appointment that you will be seeing your GP for a Mental Health Care Plan for the expressed purpose of seeing a Clinical Psychologist. It takes approximately 30 minutes to discuss the plan with you and fill in the required paperwork. If you intend seeing me, provide my details to your doctor.
From the 31st of December 2012, the number of counselling sessions eligible people can receive through Medicare is 10 individual sessions per calendar year. Your referring doctor will assess your progress after the first six sessions. You may also receive up to 10 group therapy sessions per calendar year.
Once you have used your Medicare rebate sessions you can claim on private health cover. Please contact your provider to determine if you are eligible.
